Water level continued to fall on Monday as the Teesta, Brahmaputra and Ghaghot rivers started flowing below the danger mark in some northern districts.

With the recession of floodwater, the flood situation was improving slowly.

Thousands of people were still in search of food, water and sanitation, especially in Gaibandha, Kurigram, Jamalpur, Tangail districts amid shortage of relief, said sources.

The flood forecasting and warning centre (FFWC) in its Monday evening update said all the major rivers might fall further in next 48 hours except the Ganges.

The improvement of existing flood situation (due to decline in water levels of rivers) in different parts of the country might continue in next 24 hours, it said.

However, seven rivers at 11 points in the country were flowing above the danger level including Jamuna in Jamalpur, Karotoa, Atrai in Sirajganj, Gur River in Natore, Dhaleswary in Tangail, Kushiyara and Surma in Moulvibazar and Sylhet were flowing above the danger mark.

Some 32 villages under five unions of Singra upazila in Natore district were flooded afresh on Monday as the Gur River started flowing 13cm over the danger mark, said Water Development Board, Natore officials.

According to the ministry of disaster and relief, 6.07 million people in 28 districts in the country were marooned till Sunday. Of them, 0.63 million lost everything.

Kurigram is among the worst-affected districts this year where half of its population-- 1.05 million-were marooned by floods and thousands of them are still stranded in submerged villages and shoals, said the ministry data.

Some 0.6 million people were marooned in Gaibandha, 30 per cent of its population.

In Jamalpur, 1.28 million or 51 per cent of its population have been marooned by floods, according to the ministry.

"But relief materials for 6.1 million people were too little which even created humanitarian crisis in places," said Md Fazlur Rahman, an activist of a Facebook-based volunteer group supplying relief materials to flood victims in Nilphamari, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts.

Our Gaibandha correspondent adds: Though Ghaghot and Karotoa were flowing below the danger level in the district, more than 0.5 million were still marooned as water from villages was receding very slowly.

He said people were still in a need for relief but were getting a little amount against their demand. Only 6,000 packets of dry food and 1,500 tonnes of rice were distributed in last 20 days.

Some 0.15 million people lost everything when they got only Tk 1.5 million for rebuilding their home, he said, adding that 1,500 people have already contracted diarrhea in the district.

The ministry data showed that a total of 27,000 tonnes of rice, Tk 47 million in cash, 0.113 million packets of dry food have been distributed among 6.07 million flood-affected people in 28 districts in last four weeks.

According to the health directorate, floods have so far killed 119 people. Of them, 98 drowned.
