Flood situation likely to worsen in 11 districts until Saturday

The flood situation at low lying places of the country’s eleven districts may worsen further as major rivers, especially Padma, Jamuna, Ghagot, Brahmaputra, Dharla, Dhaleswari , Atrai, and Turag are flowing above the danger mark.

The eleven districts-- Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra, Tangail, Sirajganj, Pabna, Manikganj, Rajbari, Faridpur, and Shariatpur may deteriorate further, according to a Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) bulletin issued on Thursday.

The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma rivers are in rising trend, which may continue in next 24 hours, it said.

However, the overall flood situation would improve from Sunday as the country’s major rivers, especially Padma, Jamuna, Ghagot, Brahmaputra, Dharla, Dhaleswari, Atrai and Turag are  expected to flow below  the danger mark, the forecasting centre’s executive engineer M Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan said.

Except the Kushiyara, the major rivers in the North-Eastern part of the country are in a falling trend, which may continue in the next 24 hours, he said.

The river Brahmaputra was flowing 10 and 49 cm above the danger level at Hatia and Chilmari point respectively, according to the FFWC.

The river Jamuna are flowing at 48 cm, 29 cm, 59 cm, 63 cm, 58 cm, 59 cm, 21 cm, 23 cm, and 25 cm at Fulchari ,Saghata, Bahadurabad, Sariakandi, Kazipur, Serajgan, Porabari, Mathura, and Aricha respectively above the danger level, it added.

Each year in Bangladesh, about 26,000 square kilometres, which is around 18 per cent of the country, are flooded, killing over 5,000 people and destroying more than seven million homes, according to Wikipedia.
