Flood situation in Kurigram, Nilphamari worsens

The flood situation has worsened in Kurigram and Nilphamari districts as water level of the Brahmaputra, Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers swelled on Friday due to onrush of water from hills and incessant rainfall for the last few days.

In Kurigram, low-lying areas in 25 unions of Sadar, Bhurungamari and Nageshwari upazilas were flooded, leaving 50,000 people marooned.

Officials at Bangladesh Water Development Board said the Dharla River was flowing 28 cm above its danger level.

Besides, the water level in the Brahmaputra went up by 35 cm, while in Dudhkumar by 32 cm and in Teesta 25 cm during the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, 10 villages in Sadar upazila went under water after a dam in Halokhana Sarodoba area collapsed, reports UNB.

In Nilphamari, around 20 villages in two upazilas were inundated by floodwater.

Sources at the local BWDB said the Teesta was flowing 6cm below the red mark at 2pm on Friday.

Locals said residents of 20 chars and villages of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas remained marooned following the rise in the water level on Thursday.

BWDB Executive Officer at Dalia Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury said all the sluice gates of the Teesta Barrage remained open to manage of pressure of water.
