Flood conditions worsens, half a million people marooned in two days

Flood conditions in the country's several regions worsened further as half a million people marooned afresh in the last two days amid swelling of major rivers.

About 11 people died in a day between Friday and Saturday noon while the death toll reached a total 111 in the four-week-long deluge, according to official data.

Places of four districts flooded afresh on Friday and Saturday as the number of flood-affected districts reached 30 on Saturday, according to the Ministry of Relief and Disaster Management.

A total of 3.7 million people have been marooned in the four-week-long flood that brought devastation to the localities by inundating households, damaging crops, killing cattle and birds, disconnecting roads and highways.

Five districts of Rangpur, five districts of Rajshahi, three of Mymensingh,  nine of Dhaka, all four of Sylhet and four districts of Chattogram divisions have been flooded due to the overflow of adjacent rivers, said the ministry.

Many places in Noakhali, Lakshmipur, Brahmanbaria and Habiganj were hit by the flood in the last two days.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) recorded that water was further increasing in Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Padma-Ganges basins inundating many fresh areas in northern, north-eastern, central and southern regions on Saturday.

The rise in the Brahmaputra and the Padma basins might continue for the next twenty-four hours, said FFWC.

It said that flood conditions might continue to deteriorate in the districts under Rangpur, Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions for the next twenty-four hours.

However, water started declining in the Upper Meghna Basin which might continue for two days.

FFWC forecasted that condition might improve in some north-eastern districts, including Netrakona, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet and Sunamganj districts in the next two days.

However, 17 major rivers were flowing 10 cm to 117 cm above their danger levels in 27 points of the country on Saturday.

The Jamuna started flowing 117 cm above the danger mark on Saturday morning at Sariakandi in Bogura.

Four rivers adjacent to the capital city Dhaka were flowing above their danger level which might continue for the next two days.

Dhaleshwary was flowing 114 cm, Kaliganga 98 cm, Shitalakhya 17 cm and Balu 4.0 cm over their respective danger marks on Saturday.

However, the health ministry data showed that a total of 111 people died in the flood so far, of which 11 died just in one day.

Most of the people died from drowning and snakebite, according to the ministry.
