Five shot dead on way to Shaktiman's funeral

Unidentified gunmen shot five people to death in Rangamati on Friday while they were on way to attend the funeral of Shaktimaan Chakma, slain chairman of Naniarchar upazila.

One of the five deceased was identified as Tapan Jyoti Chakma alias Barma. He was the leader of United People's Democratic Front (Ganotantrik).

The others were identified as Sujan Chakma, Pranab Chakma, Setu Lal Chakma and Md Sajib.

Eight others were injured in the attack.

Earlier, 55-year-old Shaktimaan Chakma was killed in a gun attack on Thursday morning.

Shaktiman was the vice president of Parbattya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samity's MN Larma faction.

His funeral was scheduled to be held on Friday.

According to bdnews24.com, as many as 12 people were travelling to Naniarchar to join the funeral by microbus from Khagrachhari.

The assailants opened fire indiscriminately when the microbus reached Betchhori area of Naniarchar upazila.

Three people died on the spot and two others died in hospital, said Alamgir Kabir, superintendent of police in Rangamati.

The victims are members of a faction of United People’s Democratic Front, he said.
