Five die in Tangail road crash

At least five people have been killed and 29 others injured after a truck crashed into a roadside ditch in Tangail’s Kalihati.

The accident occurred on the Tangail-Mymensingh Highway near a bridge in the Kalihati Bus Stand area at around 5:00 am on Monday, said Kalihati Police OC Mir Mosharraf Hossain.

The truck was taking a number of labourers from Gaibandha to Habiganj, he said. It veered out of the driver’s control in the bus stand area, overturned and fell into a roadside ditch.

Thirty-four people injured in the accident were brought to Tangail Sadar Hospital’s Emergency Division on Monday morning, according to Dr Mosharraf Hossain. Five of them later died from their injuries.

One of the victims, Sumon, said they all worked at a factory in Habiganj. Two trucks were taking 120 employees back to Habiganj from Gaibandha after their Eid holidays, he said, bdnews24 reported.

Some of the injured are in critical condition, said Kalihati OC Hossain.
