Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque breathed his last at 8:30am on Saturday aged 75.
He died at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital in Dhaka, said his ministry in a statement.
Haque had been suffering from prostrate problems and was kept in the intensive care unit of the country's tertiary level healthcare centre.
He leaves behind his wife and son. His son, Raihanul Hoque, is a lecturer at Dhaka Medical College.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina offered their condolences at the death.
Born on March 4, 1942 in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar, Hoque had been in politics since much before 1971 liberation war in which he played a role.
He was elected to the Brahmanbaria-1 seat in 1973 during the first parliamentary polls. He was again elected in the 1996, 2001, 2008 and 2014 elections.
Hailed as an honest politician, Hoque was appointed as fisheries and livestock minister on January 12, 2014.
During his tenure, Bangladesh became the fourth largest producer of fish and goat products. The ministry also highlighted his role in increasing the hilsa stock.
The minister faced criticism last year after attacks on the Hindu community in his constituency of Nasirnagar.
His body was taken to his government-allocated home at Mintu Road’s Mantripara around 11:00am. The body was later taken to the hospital morgue.
Sayedul Hoque’s body was scheduled to be taken to the premises of the parliament building at 8:30am on Sunday.
The first namaj-e-janaza prayers will be held there after the prime minister and other members of the Awami League pay their respects. The body will then be taken to Brahmanbaria, where it will be buried after funeral prayers.
