A fire gutted the stage built for the celebration of the 57th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on Saturday night.

President Abdul Hamid is scheduled to attend the programme as the chief guest on Sunday.

The fire broke out around 11:45 pm while the decoration works were going on near the administration building in the campus, according to eyewitnesses.

On information, six fire-fighting units rushed in and doused the fire around 12:45 am, said Shahidur Rahman, deputy director of Mymensingh Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Fire service officials primarily suspected that the fire was generated from an electric short circuit, UNB reported.

The president is also supposed to inaugurate ''Haor and Chor Development Institute'' at the university following today's programme.

BAU Proctor Atikur Rahman Khokon said they had handed over the charge of the stage to Special Security Force members in the evening.

He added that they would try their best to hold the programme if the president agreed to join.
