Ferry operations have partially resumed in Munshiganj’s Shimulia-Kathalbari route after strong current in the Padma River disrupted services for nearly 17 hours.

However, many passengers continue to suffer as hundreds of cars remain stuck in the harbour area. Four ferries, along with launches and speed boats, have started plying the important water route from 6:00am on Thursday, said Abdul Alim, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Shimulia Ghat manager (commerce).

The strong river current has calmed down a bit, Alim said. As a result, ferry services recommenced in the morning.  But only four out of 15 ferries are currently in operation. Full services will resume once the currents subside, bdnews24 reported quoting the BIWTC official.

“Ferry services were halted from Tuesday night due to heavy waves and strong currents in the Padma. Although four ferries operated on Wednesday morning, the authorities shut down all services from the afternoon.”
