Police have arrested Umme Sultana Popi, the prime suspect in the case over the attempted murder of the critically burnt madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi in Feni’s Sonagazi.

Popi, the niece of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa Principal Siraj-ud-Daula and Nusrat’s classmate, was arrested at her home in Chanchandiya in Sonagazi’s Pour, the case’s investigating officer said.

Another suspect named in the case dossier, Zubayer Ahmed, was also arrested on Tuesday night, said the investigating officer, reports bdnews24.com.

A total 10 suspects, including three named in the case dossier, have been arrested so far. Of them, police have held seven in jail and the remaining three in custody for questioning.

Nusrat’s family initiated a case of sexual abuse against the madrasa’s Principal Siraj Ud Daula in March.

Nusrat’s relatives alleged that the principal tried to burn her to death with the help of his followers after she refused to withdraw the sexual abuse case against him.

Over 80 per cent of her body was burnt in the incident. Nusrat is currently receiving treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burns unit in a critical condition.
