Father looks on as Annisul begins journey towards eternity

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq's father Shariful Huq did not know about the death of his son for two days, but the nonagenarian is taken to Annisul's residence to have a last glimpse of his beloved son.

The family did not inform him about the matter, as they were concerned about the shock he might have had at the devastating news.

But, finally, 96-year old Shariful was taken to Annisul's house at Banani in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon after the body arrived from London, where he died undergoing treatment at a hospital on Thursday.

Shariful has been staying at another son, Bangladesh Army chief General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq's residence at Dhaka Cantonment since Annisul was admitted to the hospital around four months ago.

A special ambulance of the army with intensive care facilities carried Shariful to Annisul's house around 2:15pm after Annisul's body was taken there from the airport.

From the ambulance, he was taken in a wheelchair into the house, with a tube put into his nose.

AKM Mizanur Rahman, one of Annisul's aides, told bdnews24.com that Shariful was kept next to the body for around 10 minutes but did not say anything or showed any emotion.

"He (Shariful) is also sick. He did not say anything or shed tears. He only looked on. We could not understand his feelings," Mizanur said.

A bdnews24.com story said Shariful was later brought back to General Belal's house around 2:30pm.

The hearse carrying Annisul's body started for Army Stadium around 3pm.

After a funeral prayer there, the mayor was buried at Banani Graveyard.

Shariful, hailing from Kabirhat at Companyganj in Noakhali, had worked at the Ansar force.

He has two other sons. Iqbal Huq is a doctor living in the United States while Helal Huq is a US Navy captain.

Annisul posted some photos of the celebrations of Shariful’s birthday on Facebook on July 14, 2015.

“Today is my father’s 94th birthday. He has suffered much for our wellbeing. He never indulged in wrongdoings and corruption during his time as a government employee. He always told us that he would not be able to leave any asset, but education, for us. Please pray for him,” Annisul wrote in the Facebook post.

Shariful Huq cast his ballot for Annisul in 2015 mayoral election along with other members of the family at Banani Bidyaniketan centre on April 28.

There, he had told bdnews24.com: “I am hopeful that my son will get elected.”
