Fatehpur overpass will be completed in 25 days: Quader

Work on a railway overpass at Fathepur in Feni will be completed in 25 days, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said.

He came up with the disclosure while speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Sunday, reports UNB.

Of late, Dhaka-Chattogram highway is experiencing a horrible traffic jam due to ongoing construction work on the overpass.

Quader said the railway overpass at Fatehpur, Feni is at the final stage. “Bangladesh Army has been tasked with the job and its chief himself is overseeing the work. The army chief has promised to complete the work before eid. They’ll complete the entire work by the next 24-25 days.”

Mentioning that the overpass has two lanes, he said one part will be opened on Tuesday which will help reduce the traffic jam.

The minister also said the homebound people will not have to go through sufferings during their Eid-ul-Fitr journeys.

He also blamed the traffic jam on the busy highway on the work on the Kanchpur, Meghna and Gomti bridges.

Turning to the quota reforms, Quader, Awami League General Secretary, said the threat to launch a movement for gazette notification in this regard is illogical as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already settled the quota issue and she never reneges on her words.

“The Prime Minister has already settled the quota issue. There’ll be no quota system. The quota system for which the movement was launched has already been abolished. We should trust what the Prime Minister said in Parliament,” he said.

The minister said the process to issue a gazette notification on the quota system is underway.

He, however, said some issues should be sorted out before publication of the gazette as there are children of freedom fighters, women, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and citizens of some backward districts among the beneficiaries.

Quader also asked the students to have patience, saying they will get the solution soon. “The movement has already done enough damage. I hope they’ll return to their classes.”
