BOGURA, Jan 26: A good number of extreme poor farmers of Bogura district are becoming self-reliant rearing Turkey birds from last year.
Sensing lucrative profit, over 300 new farmers in Dupchanchia, Gabtoly, Sariakandi, Sonatola, Shajahanpur, Sherpur, Adamdighi, Kahaloo and Sadar upazilas of the district are rearing birds commercially.
Turkey farming has become a buzzword across the region due to its positive signs of profit, said upazila animal and husbandry officers. From last year, turkey hen rearing has brought smile among marginal farmers, he added.
According to suggestions of district livestock office, the farmers of the region have attended a short training course on 'How to rear the bird easy investing small capital'. They have started changing socio-economic condition with the profession.
"I have started rearing 15 Turkey birds in my farm in last September on a small scale spending over Tk 35,000," said farmer Hossain Ali under Adamdighi upazila of the district. He said, "I intend to expand the farm from 15 to 35 within very short time."
Farmers of the region purchase each chicken at Tk 350 to 450 from the breeder where the hatchery men produce them. Sometimes the farmers of the area bring the chicken from nearby Shingra upazila of Natore district.
During a recent visit the correspondent found a matured hen being sold from Tk 2,200 to 3,000 in the wholesale markets. The farm owner of the upazila complained that they are not getting adequate loan facilities whenever they seek the capital. If they are provided loan facilities on easy terms, they would be greatly benefited.
District livestock official said they had provided all sorts of logistic support among the farmers to make the programme a grand success. Turkey hen rearing is increasing gradually across the district, he added.
