Fani effect: Dhaka experiencing gloomy weather

Dhaka city is experiencing gloomy weather under the influence of cyclone Fani on Friday.

With two brief spells of rains since 9:30am, the city skies have so far remained cloudy with little sight of the sun.

The rains in the capital lasted for 20 minutes starting at 9:35am. Again, it started around 11:00am, only to stop some 15 minutes later.

The latest rains were a relief for the people in Dhaka after weeks of rainless weather and a week of heat wave since April 14, when Dhaka witnessed a wet day for the last time.

As well as in Dhaka on Friday, similar gloomy weather is being witnessed in many other districts, including Gazipur, Narsingdi and Narayanganj since this morning.

In Patuakhali and Barguna, two of the coastal districts likely to be hit by the cyclone, it started raining  in the early hours of this day, at 2:45am.

In Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali, at least 10 villages have reportedly been flooded after two dams were damged on the Andarmanik river due to impacts of the cyclone that made its landfall in India.

A weather expert, Ashraf Uddin said, "Rains coupled with gusty winds will continue at various places across the country under the influence of Fani all over the day.''

The director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Shamsuddin Ahmed forecast that Fani may become much weaker before hitting Khulna and the southwestern part of the country.

The cyclone hit India's state of Odisha with a wind speed of 200kph, but it will come down to 80-100kp when hitting Bangladesh, he said on Friday morning.

The effects of the cyclone that will bear down on the coasts of the country will linger for two days, including rains, Shamsuddin added.

Powerful cyclone Fani lashed India's state of Odisha around 9:00am on Friday.
