JOYPURHAT, Oct 20: Snake gourd growers in the district are happy over the fair prices and good yield this season.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said they encourage the farmers to grow the item on a large scale.
They said the farming has already exceeded the target.
Sources said Akkelpur, Kalai, Panchbibi, Khetlal and Sadar upazias are well-known for growing quality snake gourd, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Azizur Rahman.
A good number of farmers have attained financial solvency by growing the popular vegetable in their land.
Some Tk 12,000 to Tk 15,000 is needed to grow snake gourd in a bigha of land and over Tk 50, 000 to Tk 60,000 net profit can be possible.
Each maund of snake gourd is being sold at Tk 900 to Tk 1,200 in the retail market while Tk 800 to Tk 850 in the wholesale market.
Upazila agriculture officer of Kalai Rezaul Karim said snake gourd farming is boosting economical condition of the grassroots farmers as it is a profitable venture.
