BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday said holding a fair election under the Awami League government is not possible.

“The election process has turned into a farce and no election atmosphere is prevailing in the country,” he told reporters in front of his Thakurgaon residence on Thursday morning.

Attacks sponsored by the state itself are being made on BNP people, he said, terming those attacks ‘very unfortunate and unimaginable’.

Fakhrul also alleged that the goons equipped with sticks, machetes and arms are not only roaming in the area openly but also threatening people, UNB reported.

He added, “It’s most unfortunate that a rumour has been doing the round that the law enforcement agencies will remain with them (Awami League)

and a meeting with presiding officers was held in this regard, deciding that no one will go against the government.”

The BNP secretary general also alleged that the “Awami goons” have been torching BNP offices and houses of the minority people and blaming BNP for all those horrific activities.

However, he made it clear that the party will not boycott the election, saying, “We’re in the election and will remain there till the end.”
