Ex-Farmers Bank chairman rules out allegations of irregularities

Former chairman of Farmers Bank Ltd Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir has dismissed all allegations brought against him by three newspapers of  irregularities in the bank.

The lawmaker described reports as 'untrue and motivated information' in a speech on point of order in the parliament.

The newspapers mentioned that MK Alamgir transferred Tk 130 million to his bank account from a client's account on July 17 last.

"I never faced such big untrue information in my 77 years of life," he said in the House.

"No such money entered my account from July 17 to subsequent 7-10 days," he said adding that such allegation is a barrier towards creating a healthy atmosphere in society.

MK Alamgir was managing director of Shilpa Bank, chairman of Krishi Bank and Shilpa Rin Sangstha.

He also served as executive director of Jeddah-based Islamic Development Bank in the past.

Mentioning previous experiences, he claimed nobody had ever been able to bring such an allegation.

The lawmaker said nobody can prove that any money entered his account in Farmers Bank from loan seekers.

Rejecting another allegation, the ruling party MP said during his tenure as chairman of the Farmers Bank, they did not process any loan without approval from the central bank.

According to UNB, a Bangladesh Bank observer was in the Board of Members of Farmers Bank for two years who also watched the activities, he said.

Though the media said the Farmers Bank provided larger amount of loans going beyond the approved one.

"I'm also turning down this allegation," Alamgir told the House.

He said they tried to recruit competent officers to the Farmers Bank.

"The bank appointed the higher number of successors of freedom fighters than all private banks in the country," he added.
