Every court premises to have restrooms for justice seekers

Thousands of justice-seeking people gather every day on court premises across the country. Some people come to appear in the courts in their respective cases, some people come to meet with their imprisoned relatives. Many people also come to provide legal assistance to imprisoned persons. However, there is no arrangement for them to take rest there or enough washroom facilities.

Mothers who come to the courts with nursing babies face the most ironic situation. To alleviate the sufferings of these people who come for different purposes the Chief Justice has taken the initiative of setting up restrooms on the premises of every District and Session Judge's Court and other relevant courts.

A restroom for the justice-seeking people is under construction on the Supreme Court campus. The chief justice has instructed to name these restrooms 'Nyaykunja'.

A letter has been sent to the Secretaries of Law Ministry and Housing and Public Works Ministry, all District and Sessions Judges, Chief Architect of the Department of Architecture and Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department from the Supreme Court on June 13 on the instructions of the Chief Justice to take necessary steps in this regard.

According to the letter, Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique has opined to set up a restroom for at least 100 people in each District and Session Judge's Court and for 40-50 people in every Chowki Court.

The restrooms will have separate units for men and women, separate rooms for breastfeeding mothers, two toilets in each unit, an arrangement for potable water in every unit and a mini stationery shop, also read the letter.

Md Saifur Rahman, spokesperson of the Supreme Court and also Registrar of the Appellate Division, said, “The construction of the restroom in the Supreme Court campus is in the final stage. Hopefully, it can be inaugurated very soon after the completion of the construction work.”
