Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, who has died today (Sunday) at the age of 90 after having been on life support for the last 10 days, will be laid to eternal rest at the army graveyard in Dhaka city on Tuesday.

The burial will follow four funeral prayers in Dhaka and Rangpur, the former military dictator's hometown.

The first namaz-e-janaza for Ershad was held at the Army Central Mosque in Dhaka on Sunday after Zuhr prayers. Later, his mortal remains will be kept at the CMH mortuary for the night.

His second namaz-e-janaza will be held at South Plaza of the parliamentary building at 10am on Monday.

Later, the body will be taken to the party’s central office at the Dhaka’s Kakrail for the party leaders and activists for people to pay tribute from noon to 3pm.

A third namaz-e-janaza will be held at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Asr prayers on the same day.

Ershad will be flown by helicopter to Rangpur on Tuesday morning.

The fourth funeral prayers will be held at 10:30am at his hometown Eidgah ground. He will be brought back to Dhaka for burial after Zohr prayers.

A qulkhwani or the post-funeral ceremony for Ershad will be held at Azad Mosque in Gulshan on Wednesday after Asr prayers.

Earlier around 7:45am today (Sunday), Ershad breathed his last at the Combined Medical Hospital in the capital, bdnews24.com reports.

The 90-year-old deposed military dictator has been suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome or a low-level of haemoglobin in his blood for long.

He was diagnosed with lung infection and kidney ailment after he was admitted to the CMH on June 22.

Ershad returned to Bangladesh on December 26, just ahead of the general election after treatment in a Singapore hospital.

He pulled himself out of the electoral race in the Dhaka-17 seat citing his illness, but contested in the Rangpur-3 constituency without campaigning and won the election.

Only a few months ago, in April, the former military strongman formed a trust and donated all of his assets to it.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, among others, have expressed deep shock at the death of Ershad, also the leader of Opposition in Parliament.
