Ensure quality and standard online education, urges UGC to universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged the country’s university teachers to ensure quality and standard education on online to meet the goal of higher education and national demand.

In the existing coronavirus pandemic, the importance and necessity of online education activities has increased, observed UGC at a meeting with the officials of 141 private and public universities on Thursday in a virtual meeting.

“Teaching online is now a reality. We need to focus on solving internet and device problems of students as well as ensuring quality and standard higher education through online,” said Chairman of the UGC Prof Kazi Shahidullah at the meeting.

The discovery of the COVID-19 vaccine will not diminish the importance of online education, even if we go back to direct and regular teaching, he added, advising the universities to provide online courses apart from regular direct courses.

He made the remarks at the meeting titled ‘The role of Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in pandemic, challenges and way-out’. The meeting was attended by IQAC directors of 141 universities while UGC member Prof Muhammad Alamgir chaired the event.

Speaking as the chief guest, the UGC chairman said, “IQAC should work to introduce a policy on online education to ensure the standard and quality of online education so that we can continue education in such condition, including in the pandemic.”

He advised those associated with higher education in the country to become accustomed to online education, adding that UGC is working to ensure internet service to students with a nominal cost.

At the meeting, IQAC directors of the private and public universities assured that they are committed to ensure quality and standard education despite existing challenges of online education in universities.
