Eminent jurist Barrister Rafique-Ul Huq passes away

Eminent lawyer Barrister Rafique-ul-Huq has passed away while undergoing treatment in ICU at Ad-Deen Hospital in Dhaka.

Senior Supreme Court (SC) lawyer and former Attorney General of Bangladesh breathed his last at 8:30am on Saturday. He was 85.

Announcing his death, Dr Nahida Yeasmin, director of the hospital, said the renowned SC lawyer was suffering from different old-age related complications including urine infection.

The namaz-e-janaza of the eminent jurist will be held at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) premises at 2:00pm today.

He will be buried at Banani graveyard later.

Huq was born in Calcutta on 2 November 1935 to Momin Ul Huq. He earned his LLB and MA degrees from Calcutta University in 1957 and 1958 respectively. He became Barrister-at-Law in 1961.

He enrolled as an advocate in Calcutta High Court in 1960. He joined the High Court at Dhaka in 1962 and enrolled as an advocate in the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1965. In 1975, he joined as a senior advocate in Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. He was appointed as the Attorney General of Bangladesh in 1990.

Huq served as the counsel of the then Bangladesh Awami League President Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh National Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia when they were charged for corruption cases during 2006–08 Bangladeshi political crisis.
