Electrical short-circuit behind FR Tower fire: Probe

An electrical short-circuit on the seventh floor of the FR Tower triggered the deadly FR Tower fire, according to an investigation by the home ministry.

A Security Services Division team of six has made a report on the investigation and is awaiting return of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal from abroad to publish it, Additional Secretary Tarun Kanti Sikder says.

The investigators filed the report to Secretary Md Shahiduzzaman on April 21, Sikder, who headed the investigation, said on Friday.

“A short-circuit caused the fire. We assume the fire originated on the seventh floor,” he said.

The fire in the 23-storey building at Banani in Dhaka killed 27 people on March 28.

It emerged later that the builders of the high-rise on Kamal Ataturk Avenue had permission for 18 storeys.

The building did not have adequate fire safety system which led to the casualties, investigators from other government committees said earlier, bdnews24.com reported.

The disaster management and relief ministry committee has also identified short-circuit on the seventh floor as the reason behind the fire.

The seventh floor of the building housed the office of Spectra SN Tex, a textile firm.

Md Kafil Uddin, an assistant manager at Spectra, claimed the fire originated somewhere else, saying they had seen burning things falling from the upper floors.
