Ekushey Book Fair becomes friends’ rendezvous

Amar Ekushey Book Fair has turned out to be a grand meeting place for friends of different ages, neighbourhoods and educational institutions.

In a great ambience that the Ekushey Book Fair offers, friends greet each other, exchange books as gift and discuss on contemporary literatures.

Over 2,349 books made entry into the month-long Amar Ekushey Book Fair till Friday.

UNB found some of the groups - students - in their school and college uniforms visiting different stalls and buying books.

Science fictions remain main genre on their list of purchase.

Children celebrated the Shishu Prohor (special hours for the children) from 11 am to 1 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Parents of the children looked excited as their children were satisfied with the warm welcome of the book fair.

They said that the special time for the children should be extended and more entertaining.

Children can be accustomed to reading books in this way easily, they opined.

Some parents complained of high prices of the books meant for the children.

Publishers said the children's books are bit high in their prices for the illustrations and high-quality papers.

Of all the books hitting the fair each day, books of poetry outnumbered books of all other genres.

On Sunday, a discussion focusing on A F Salahuddin Ahmed, Mujjafar Ahmed Choudhury and A K Nazmul Karim will be held at 4 pm at the main stage of Bangla Academy premises while Muntasir Mamun, Mizanur Rahman Shoili, and Sonia Nishat Amin will present keynote speeches.

Borhan Uddin Khan will preside over the discussion event while a cultural event will be held.

The book fair will remain open from 3pm to 9 pm.

On Saturday, regular discussion on A K M Ahsan, Khan Shamsur Rahman and Mujibul Haque was held with M Mokammel and Professor Abdul Momin Choudhury taking part.

Books are being sold at 25 per cent discount while one can get 10 percent additional discount if transactions are made through the bKash.
