Backpackers and holidaymakers in their thousands left the capital, Dhaka, on Thursday for village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with their near and dear ones.

Major bus terminals, Kamalapur railway station and Sadarghat launch terminal witnessed a big rush of home-bound people since early morning.

Due to increased traffic, terrible tailbacks were reported on Dhaka-Tangail highway in the morning and on Dhaka-Aricha highway at noon.

Meanwhile, vehicular movement was pretty normal across the newly-opened Dhaka-Mawa Expressway that leads to Padma Multipurpose Bridge.

At Kamalapur Railway Station in the city, holidaymakers were seen suffering a lot following severe disruption to train schedules on the third day of Eid journey.

Sources said a good number of packed trains, especially bound for north, left the platforms at least two to three hours late.

On Dhaka-Aricha highway, traffic was metabolic at Ashulia point as factories in the Savar-Ashulia belt shut on Thursday ahead of the Eid vacation.

On Dhaka-Tangail highway, tailback was created on several kilometres in the morning near Bangabandhu Bridge as all north-bound busses use this lone route.

Buses of at least 26 districts use Dhaka-Tangail highway.

Meanwhile, Dhaka's bus terminals witnessed a mad rush of passengers who are all set to move to their ancestral homes for celebrating the feast of sacrifice.

Hundreds of thousands of people, including men, women and children, rushed to Sayedabad, Mohakhali and Gabtoli bus terminals to get buses for going home.

But they had to wait long hours for getting their respective buses due to long tailbacks on highways.

Bus operators have also failed to maintain schedules for the same reason.

As Padma Bridge opens, many passengers opted to go to Madaripur, Shariatpur, Khulna, Barishal and Faridpur by bus as huge crowds thronged Sayedabad bus terminal.

"After three hours' wait, I got a chance to get aboard my bus," Md Hasan, a Shariatpur-bound passenger, told the FE at the terminal at 4:00 pm on the day.

Mr Hasan said he had visited Shariatpur by launch in the previous years and now he was moving to his village home by bus following the opening of Padma Bridge.

Meanwhile, passengers in drives rushed to Dhaka River Port Terminal for going to their respective districts mainly southern districts by launch.

Passengers at Sadarghat terminal said they did not face hassle like previous years as a mentionable number of passengers started moving to Barishal, Madaripur, Shariatpur and some other southern districts by bus.

Launch operators have charged them the actual fare.

"I'm happy in the absence of excessive passengers on launches due to the opening of Padma Bridge," Md Jabbar Sikder, a Barishal-bound launch passenger, told the FE in the afternoon.
