EC to write ministries not to hold meeting with returning officers

The Election Commission will send letters to all ministries asking them not to hold any meeting with returning officers.

EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said this while briefing reporters about the decisions of the EC's meeting held at Nirbachan Bhaban on Tuesday.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda presided over the meeting, reports UNB..

"Since the returning officers are now under the Election Commission, a decision was taken so that no other (ministry) can sit in any meeting with them," the secretary said.

"We'll inform this all concerned (ministries) by sending the letter to the Cabinet Division and other ministries," he said.

Earlier in the day, BNP lodged a complaint with the CEC that the returning officers were briefed at the Prime Minister's Office on their way from the EC's briefing on November 13.

Immediately after the announcement of election schedule on November 8, the Election Commission appointed a total of 66 returning officers - 64 deputy commissioners and two divisional commissioners in Dhaka and Chattogram -- for the 11th national election slated for December 30.

About different allegations placed by BNP, the EC Secretary said no general allegation except the specific one will be taken into consideration.

If they lodge any allegation based on facts, the Commission will take measures reviewing it, he said.
