EC rules out deferment of election

The Election Commission (EC) will not defer the upcoming 11th parliamentary polls, slated for December 30.

“There is no scope for pushing back the election for some legal and constitutional reasons,” EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said this while speaking at a press conference at the media centre of the commission on Thursday.

The EC came up with announcement responding to the Jatiya Oikyafront’s call for deferring the polls date by a month.

The commission revised the polls schedule, deferring the election by a week. It fixed November 28 as the deadline for filing nominations, December 2 for scrutiny and December 9 as the last date of withdrawal.
