Ducsu polls: Kuwait Maitree provost relieved after rigging

The acting provost of Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, Shabnam Jahan, has been relieved of her duty, as evidence of rigging was found there during the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election.

She has been replaced by Mahbuba Nasreen, Vice Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said, adding that a four-member committee has been formed to probe the incident.

Voting at the hall resumed at 11:10 am and it will continue until 5:10pm, according to him.

Earlier around 9:30am, the balloting, which began at 8:00am and was supposed to end at 2:00pm, was suspended after sealed ballot papers in a sack were found at the hall triggering protests.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Muhammad Samad said they suspended the vote after the allegations of ballot-box stuffing made by students were found to be true.

Students and candidates of different panels said the ballot papers were sealed the night before in favour of the hall unit of the panel, nominated by Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League.

The Ducsu, which had played a pivotal role in all democratic movements of the country, has gone to the polls this day after long 28 years.
