DU student dies falling off tree on campus

A Dhaka University (DU) student died falling off a mango tree on the campus in the city on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Towfique Omar, 23, a first-year student of Urdu Department. Hailing from Satkhira district, he had been residing at Poet Jasimuddin Hall of the university.

DU Proctor Golam Rabbani  said Towfique along with some of his friends went to pluck mangoes from a tree in front of the university's Central Mosque in the early hours.

He suddenly fell from the tree around 2:00am while plucking mangoes, leaving him severely injured.

His friends took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted him to Japan-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital.

The DU student, however, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) around 1:00pm.

The hospital authorities handed over the body to the DU authorities around 2:00pm, the proctor said, reports UNB.
