The authority of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has started repairing the damaged roads of the city to make those fit for vehicular movement before June next.
"The repair will take time of the dilapidated roads badly damaged during the last rainy season...The authority is trying to repair the roads as soon as possible before the upcoming rainy season," DSCC Additional Chief Engineer Asaduzzaman said.
He said heavy rainfalls occurred during the last monsoon and many roads of the DSCC area were affected.
Asaduzzaman said there are around 1,000 kilometers (km) roads, 950 km drains and 217 km footpaths in the DSCC area.
He said Mohammad Sayeed Khokan took charge as DSCC mayor on May 6 in 2015. After assumption of office, the mayor has been implementing different programmes, including repairing of damaged roads and footpaths.
Around 473.24 kilometres roads, 469 kilometres drains and 112.48 kilometres footpaths have been repaired after Sayeed Khokan assumed office, he added.
The additional chief engineer said, "We have already sent a DPP (development project proposal) after surveying the roads and the concerned ministry sent the DPP to the Planning Commission... Later, the project will go to ECNEC for the final approval," Asaduzzaman said.
"We hope that the project will get approval at ECNEC soon," he added.
According to the survey of DSCC, 222.73 km roads, 229.78 km drains and 80.68 km footpaths were damaged during the last rainy season, he said, adding the DSCC made the DPP worth Tk 6.69 billion (Tk 669 crore) to repair the dilapidated roads, drains and footpaths, reports BSS.
