A number of Bangladeshi workers have remained stranded in Algeria for the past two years as they fell victim to human trafficking in the name of labour migration.

Victims and their families accused manpower recruiter 'Banna Bijoy' of trafficking in the hapless migrants.

The agency sent them to Algeria and promised to manage jobs for them in European countries in early 2019.

It sent at least 52 workers from different districts, including Munshiganj, Madaripur, Bogura and Dinajpur.

Two of the workers succumbed to separate accidents (one died after falling off an under-construction building and another drowned in the sea on the way to Spain).

Thirteen workers managed to return home, but the rest are staying in different places of the North African nation, they said.

They are now living in a vulnerable condition as they have no required support to stay well there, they mentioned.

Tahmina Aktar, wife of Sk Sumon, said her husband stayed in a camp with five Bangladeshis at the outbreak of coronavirus in Algeria.

Presently, they are staying at another place and have no money to maintain basic needs, she stated.

Ms Aktar said her husband gave Tk 300,000 to the recruiting agent to go to Algeria.

"Moneylender is giving pressure to pay the instalment. My husband borrowed Tk 250,000 to meet the recruitment charge. We have to pay Tk 30,000 in monthly instalment."

Ms Aktar urged the authorities concerned to bring her husband back home immediately and ensure justice.
