Domestic workers' welfare: Trade union leaders demand policy execution

Trade unionists and civil-society representatives have demanded implementation of the 'Domestic Workers Protection and Welfare Policy-2015' to safeguard domestic workers across the country.

They also called for the government to include domestic workers in labour laws and the ratification of the ILO Convention-189.

The demands were made during a human chain formed by the Domestic Workers Rights Network (DWRN) outside the National Press Club on Saturday.

Incidents such as rape, murder and human rights violations against domestic workers have increased alarmingly across the country in recent years.

The speakers said two domestic workers named Tania Begum (17) at Dhaka's Banani area and Sumaiya Akhter (12), a child domestic worker in Cumilla, were tortured cruelly recently.

Due to the non-implementation of the policy made for the protection of domestic workers, according to them, death and rape of home helps happen almost daily.

They demanded fair compensation and medical expenses for and rehabilitation of the injured workers. DWRN acting coordinator Abul Hossain, Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies vice-chairman Amriul Haque Amin and Jatiya Sramik Jote executive president Abdul Wahed, among others, were present there.
