DNCC mayoral by-poll: All four unsuccessful candidates have security money forfeited

All four unsuccessful candidates of the Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral by-election have had their security money forfeited as they failed to get one-eighth of the total votes.

Of them, according to unofficial results announced by the Election Commission in the early hours of Friday, Jatiya Party’s Shafin Ahmed polled the highest – 52,429 votes.

Three others National People’s Party’s Anisur Rahman Dewan bagged 8695 votes, Progressive Democratic Party’s Shahin Khan, 8560 votes and independent contestant Abdur Rahim, 14040 votes.

The Election Code of Conduct 41 (3) stipulates that the candidates, getting less than one-eighth votes in the city corporation election, will not get back their security money.

If a city corporation has more than 2.0 million voters, a candidate has to deposit Tk 100,000 as security money.

By that count, the Election Commission has earned Tk 400,000 from security money forfeiture in this by-election.

A total of 942,539 voters exercised their rights in the mayoral by-poll of DNCC – home to 3,035,599 voters.

As many as 19,513 votes were also cancelled and that number is more than what mayoral candidates Dewan and Khan got altogether.

AL candidate Atiqul Islam won the by-election, bagging 8,39,302 votes, with a huge margin of 7,86,873 votes, compared to his nearest rival Shafin Ahmed, who received 52,429.
