Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam proposed Saturday that the manpower, infrastructure and other equipment of the drainage circle of DWASA be handed over to the city corporation.

The mayor also proposed construction of bi-cycle lane from Kuril Biswaroad to Airport.

"The canals belong to the district administration. DWASA is responsible for maintenance and draining out water. But city corporation is always being blamed and mayor and councillors have to be accountable for the sufferings of the citizens, not WASA," Atiq said.

LGRD minister Tazul Islam was prseent as the chief guest at the porgramme.

DNCC and Bangladesh Army finally excavated the 1.90 km canal jointly within 27 days to solve the waterlogging problem of the citizens of Kasaibari, Ashkona, Kaola and surrounding areas.

"This year DNCC will solve the waterlogging problem of Uttara sector 4 and 6 by constructing 4.75 km RCC swerage pipeline. Besides, retention pond was reclaimed from Banani overpass to Kakoli to solve waterlogging at the Banani main road. The waterlogging problem will be solved within next one month with the existing pipeline construction project," he said.

DNCC will take initiative to implement the rehabilitation work within next two months, he added.

"DWASA has expressed its inability to reconstruct the old, almost ineffective and narrow swerage pipeline from Moghbazar rail gate to Modhubagh. DNCC has undertaken construction work of 2.67 km RCC swerage pipeline at a cost of Tk 190 million," said Mayor.

Tazul Islam said the government has planned to turn all the canals of Dhaka city active by repairing and maintaining the those like Hatirjheel.
