The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has earmarked Tk 493 million (49.3 crore) for mosquito control programmes in its proposed budget for the 2019-20 financial year.

It was revealed when Mayor Atiqul Islam unveiled the city corporation’s budget at DNCC Nagar Bhaban in Gulshan on Thursday.

DNCC and the Dhaka South City Corporation faced severe criticism for their failure to prevent a massive outbreak of mosquito-borne disease dengue which has so far claimed 57 lives, according to official data.

A total of 73,565 people were hospitalised with dengue since January 1. Of them, 69,785 made full recovery, reports UNB.

In its Tk 30.57 billion proposed budget, the DNCC fixed a revenue income of Tk 11.06 billion and revenue expenditure of Tk 5.514 billion.

Development expenditure and other expenses are Tk 23.35 billion and Tk 120 million respectively.
