Dhaka Metropolitan Police will take tough action against traffic violators and strengthen punishments for offences.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia also promised to implement the traffic rules while addressing a press conference on Saturday, reports bdnews24.com.
"An amendment to the existing road transport law will bring harsher punishments to the errant drivers," the DMP chief said
A Road Safety Council and an advisory council will be formed to oversee traffic issues, he added.
Mia also announced the launch of a ‘Traffic Week’ on Sunday in an effort to discipline the runaway transport sector.
The DMP chief said the investigation into the deaths of two Dhaka college students in a bus accident is also proceeding.
"Four people, including the owner of Jabale Noor Paribahan, were arrested in connection with the case," he said.
The licence of the vehicle was also dismissed, he added.
Mia reiterated that the government was working to implement the student protesters’ demands and urged the students to end their demonstrations and return home.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has also taken various initiatives to ensure that the traffic situation in the capital has improved, the DMP chief said.
This included a crackdown on vehicles on the wrong side of the road, driving without a licence or registration and motorcycles on footpaths, he said.
Mia warned student protesters that Detective Branch police had found evidence that agitators had infiltrated the protest ranks and were working to instigate violence.
He also said that misleading and inflammatory posts were being shared on the social media that were attempting to spark discord.
