DMP earns Tk 70 million as fine in September

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) realised Tk 70 million as fine from different vehicles for traffic rule violations during a month-long drive and awareness campaign in September last to bring discipline in traffic system.

“Traffic police have realised Tk 70 million as fine for traffic rule violations alongside dumping and wrecking many vehicles and filing many cases during the month long campaign (from September 4 to September 30),” said DMP Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia.

“Besides taking legal action against traffic rule violations, different awareness programmes such as distributing leaflets, holding view exchanges with drivers and transport workers, were held during the period to make people aware about obeying the traffic regulations, he added.

Referring to the month-long campaign, he said, “We have achieved success in bringing discipline in traffic system by conducting the awareness campaign. But, the desired success is yet to be attained. Complete success can be achieved only if we can change the mindset of the people in obeying traffic rules and regulations.”

“Traffic department has been working relentlessly to bring discipline in traffic and police have no negligence in this regard,” he said, adding that the DMP at its own initiative has already set up 130 signboards inscribing bus stop area at different points of the capital city aimed at ensuring pick up and drop off facilities available at the designated spots.

The DMP chief called upon all particularly the responsible people in the society to abide by laws to bring discipline in traffic, saying, “The culture of disobeying laws is our main problem. It will be difficult for anybody to bring discipline in traffic as people intend to go haywire in following the laws.”

“Let all of us follow the traffic rules and inspire others in doing so to bring discipline in traffic,” he said calling upon the city dwellers to join hands with traffic police to this end.

Asaduzzaman has sounded a note of warning against traffic rule violators saying, “No DMP members will involve in any irregularity and the department will allow none to do the same. The DMP will do everything to bring discipline in traffic.”

Unveiling the month-long campaign on September 4, DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said they had taken the campaign to bring discipline in the traffic management system, saying, “Route permit of the vehicles would be cancelled in case of traffic rule violation and appointing drivers on a contract basis.”

No buses will also be allowed to load and unload passengers anywhere without the designated 111 bus stoppages,” the DMP boss said, adding that the buses have to keep their doors shut until reaching the next bus stop, reports BSS.

Asaduzzaman requested the owners of refuelling stations not to sell fuel to motorcyclists having no safety helmets with them.

The DMP chief requested city dwellers to use zebra crossings, footbridges and underpasses while crossing the roads to avoid accidents.
