Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) have expressed concern over excessive use of antibiotics in the human body and animal health, as it is harmful to health.

The organisations also suggested taking the necessary initiative immediately to check the excessive of antibiotics.

The observations were made at a virtual discussion marking World Antimicrobial Awareness Week-2020 on Monday. The programme was organised by DLS, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Bangladesh AMR Response Alliance (BARA) and Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC).

DGHS Programme Manager Aninda Rahman and DLS Assistant Director (training) Pallab Kumar Dutta said a good number of antibiotics became inactive. Besides, reserved antibiotics are being used easily.

If new antibiotics are not invented in the coming years, it will create a great problem, they said. They also said it is essential to take initiatives to stop the use of reserved antibiotics.
