Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam on Tuesday urged the city-dwellers to dispose of typical household waste and contagious waste separately to help minimise the risk of virus spread.

He also warned that the city corporation authorities will not collect waste from the households that will mix up other wastes with the contagious waste after July 7.

"Waste will not be collected from the families who will jumble household litters with contagious waste like used masks and gloves after July 7," the mayor said.

He also said initially the DNCC will provide 0.3 million specially made bags to the residents under its jurisdiction for collecting hazardous waste separately.

Mr Islam made the announcement while inaugurating a contagious waste management programme of the DNCC at East Rajabazar.

The mayor also said the ongoing 14-day lockdown in the neighbourhood will be extended for seven more days as per the directive of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Authorities concerned enforced lockdown in East Rajabazar on June 10.

The mayor acknowledged the support of the inhabitants and their role in implementing lockdown in the area.

"This is an exemplary role of the dwellers here for the implementation of lockdown measures; this will be a model for materialising such move in other areas as well," he said.

Drawing people's attention to the proper waste management, the mayor said the DNCC will provide 10 bags to each of the households having Covid-19 infected patients in East Rajabazar.

The DNCC will supply 0.3 million bags in different areas under its jurisdiction with support of the ward councillors for collecting contagious waste, he said.

Later city-dwellers will have to purchase the bags at their own cost and use them for collecting the contagious waste separately.
