Dhaka north mayor asks for listing illegally occupied roads

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has directed ward councillors to provide the city authority with the list of illegally occupied roads in their respective jurisdictions.

Expressing concerns over the dominance of illegal occupants, the mayor said a number of building owners had illegally occupied roads in many wards defying the designs approved by the government authorities concerned.

"The DNCC has decided to ensure widening of the roads after recovering them from unlawful grabbers," he said. The mayor made the request to ward councillors during a virtual board meeting of the DNCC held last week, a press release said on Tuesday.

Respective ward councillors will work to widen the roads with support of the DNCC estate department, the mayor said.

The meeting decided to procure specialised micro-buses and other vehicles to be used by people with special needs.

Another decision was made to recruit manpower to speed up the cleaning activities in the north city, added the statement.

DNCC top officials and councillors, among others, were present at the meeting.
