'Development grossly unequal in dists, UZs'

Citizen's Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh has said the country's development achievements have been grossly unequal across districts and upazilas while local realities are not reflected in policy design and implementation.

There is a lack of real-time and disaggregated data, which hampers policy-making to address specific problems at the local level, it added.

The platform underscored the need for making policy to address granular-level challenges and localisation of the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, the platform's convener and distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), spoke at a media briefing in Dhaka on Thursday.

Although the standard of living and earnings of people are rising, he said, inequality is depriving all people of the benefit of development equally.

Mr Bhattacharya said youths lack quality employment and the recent price spiral of essentials has brought multiple challenges to the 'left-behind' group of people.

Although women's contribution to society is rising, violence against them has not stopped, he lamented the fact.

Mr Bhattacharya also talked about environmental pollution, poor quality of public services and the lack of freedom of speech that bars people from talking about their rights.

Core group member of the platform and CPD distinguished fellow Prof Mustafizur Rahman presided over the event.
