Developed countries indifferent to cut emissions

Developed countries are not serious enough to cut their emissions in line with the 1.5ᴼC temperature goal putting all of us in increasing danger, said Environment Minister.

The minister appealed to all parties, developed and developing countries to work together to resolve the climate change issues during the upcoming COP27 at Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin informed that the government allocated $480 million to Bangladesh Climate Change Trust fund from its own resources and doubled climate-related expenses in the last seven years.

The minister made the remarks when Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Ahmed Siddiqui, called on the environment minister at the ministry in Dhaka on Sunday.

The minister said developed countries must scale up finance delivery to meet the $100 billion per year goal.

Mr Shahab said, as Bangladesh and Pakistan belong to the same region and group, Pakistan should have the same position in the upcoming COP27 negotiation process.

The Pakistani High Commissioner appreciated Bangladesh's various initiatives to combat climate change.

The envoy said that Pakistan, like Bangladesh, is facing its adverse effects even though it is not responsible for climate change. Bangladesh and Pakistan can raise similar demands in various international forums.

The envoy expressed hope of working together on climate change related research, exchange of experience and implementation of projects at the same time.  He proposed exchange of experience in the areas of climate change impact related activities, disaster management, agriculture, clean water etc.
