Derailment snaps Sylhet rail link with Dhaka, Ctg

Rail communication of Sylhet with the rest of the country has remained suspended since Friday morning following derailment of 11 bogies of a train in Santgaon station in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar.

The train movement has been disrupted after Upaban Express with 1,000 passengers aboard derailed around 1:00 am in the Srimangal. State Minister for Finance MA Mannan was among the passengers.

No casualties were reported in the accident that took place in front of the station, according to bdnews24.

Mujibur Rahman, assistant engineer of Sylhet railway divisional office, said the train’s pull rod broke down and fell on point and crossing blocks.

Two special trains from Kulaura and Akhaura reached the scene around 6:00am and started rescue work.

 “It will take quite a while to remove the locomotive and bring normalcy,” the engineer said.

State Minister Mannan was taken to Dhaka by a police car, said Md Ashequl Hoque, acting UNO in Srimangal.
