Dengue: Over 2100 hospitalised in last 24 hours

2,176 new patients have been hospitalised across the country in the last 24 hours since Saturday morning.

On top of that, two people, including a minor, have added up to the death toll from the mosquito borne disease as well.

The new deaths were recorded in Dinajpur and Barishal on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

A teenage girl, hailing from Thakurgaon, succumbed to dengue fever at Dinajpur General Hospital on Friday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Opi Rani Saha, 17, daughter of Anukul Chandra Roy of Lehemba village in Ranishankail upazila of Thakurgaon, as per a UNB report.

Dr AH Anwarul Islam, civil surgeon of Thakurgaon, said Opi was admitted to Thakurgaon Modern Hospital on August 5 after being diagnosed with dengue after her return from Dhaka on August 4.

She was referred to M Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital in Dinajpur on Friday following deterioration of her condition.

However, she was taken to Dinajpur General Hospital as she fell unconscious on the way. Doctors declared her dead when she was brought to the hospital, the civil surgeon said.

Family sources said Opi enrolled in a coaching centre in the capital for university admission after passing the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination from Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College.

In Barishal, Rusha, 10, hailing from Jhalakati district, died at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital on Saturday morning, said Dr Bakir Hossain, director of the hospital.

Rusha was admitted to the hospital around 8:30pm on Friday with dengue and breathed her last around 9 am.

The new dengue infections saw a rise by 174 than Friday's 2,002. Of these, 1,065 cases were reported from Dhaka alone.

The number of dengue patients came down to 2,002 on Friday from Thursday's 2,326 and Wednesday's 2,428.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) prepared the data based on reports sent to it by 40 hospitals, including 30 private ones.

Since January, 38,844 patients were admitted to hospitals with dengue and 29,395 recovered, the government said.

Currently, 9,420 patients, including children, are undergoing treatment at hospitals.

Official data show the death toll as 29 but unofficial estimates suggest the number much higher.
