Dengue: Over 1,700 hospitalised in 24 hrs

A total of 1,719 people infected with dengue were admitted to hospitals across the country in the past 24 hours till 8am on Friday, according to government data.

Of the newly admitted patients, 759 were in Dhaka alone, according to the Health Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The number of dengue patients admitted at hospitals was 1,929 on Thursday while 1,880 were admitted on Wednesday and 1,200 on Tuesday.

The government has so far confirmed 40 deaths although unofficial estimates suggest the death toll is much higher.

The DGHS said 49,999 people were hospitalised with dengue since January this year. Of them, 42,243 had made full recovery from the infection.

Currently, 7, 716 patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals and clinics, as per a report on UNB agency.

Bangladesh is grappling with its worst outbreak of dengue. Dhaka, the densely-populated megacity, has been the centre of the outbreak.

There is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue, says WHO. But early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1.0 per cent.
