Dengue claims life of another minor

A 10-year-old girl died of dengue at Sher-e Bangla Medical College in Barishal on Saturday morning.

The deceased was identified as Rusha Akter, daughter of Ruhul Amin of Jhalakathi, according to UNB.

Her uncle Jasim Uddin said the fourth grader was infected with dengue in Dhaka. Rusha recovered to some extent after treatment when her family took her to Jhalakathi to celebrate Eid.

“She was hospitalised on Friday after her condition deteriorated,” he said. “She died around 8am.”

Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Director Bakir Hossain said Rusha needed rest.

“Her condition worsened because of the journey and moreover, she was brought in at the eleventh hour,” he said.

Bangladesh has been grappling with a massive outbreak of dengue this year. Since January, 36,668 patients were admitted to hospitals with dengue and 27,876 made recovery. Between Thursday and Friday morning, 2,002 new patients were hospitalised.

The government says 29 people have so far died of dengue but unofficial estimates suggest the number is higher.

On Friday, the mosquito-borne viral disease killed five more people, including two minors, in the capital, Barishal, and Faridpur.
