The decision regarding reformation of quota system of government service will come after more analysis and research.

Cabinet Secretary Md. Shafiul Alam came up with the statement on Monday while briefing the reporters at the secretariat after regular cabinet meeting, reports UNB.

"The issue needs much more analysis and the next step will be taken in light of that," the cabinet secretary said.

"It (quota reform) has some complexity. It will take some time," he added.

Shafiul Alam said the matter is now under active consideration at the top level of the government.

" The matter has not yet come to our level," he said.

The cabinet secretary did not give any specific time about solving the issue.

Replying to another question, Shafiul said, "We haven't yet started work formally. It'll start soon."

The weekly meeting of the cabinet was held at Prime Minister’s Office on Monday with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

A group of students have been protesting under the banner of ‘Council to Protect the Rights of Bangladesh General Students’ for last few months demanding reform in quota system in government jobs.

In April, students of public and private universities across the country waged a strong movement demanding reform in the quota system.

In the face of the movement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced in parliament on April 11 the abolition of all types of quotas in public jobs.

The council is still continuing with its demonstrations as the government gazette is yet to be published despite the prime minister’s promise to abolish the quota system.

As no gazette notification has so far been issued regarding the abolishment of the quota system as per the PM's declaration, the leaders of the council gathered in front DU central library on Saturday to hold a pre-scheduled press conference to announce their fresh programme.

But, BCL activists reportedly carried out an attack on them, triggering protests at different universities in the country.
