Another Chawkbazar fire victim dies

After eight days of battling severe burn injuries, another victim of the Chawkbazar fire has died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), raising the death toll from the incident to 70.

Rezaur, 21, who had suffered 51 per cent burns on his body, succumbed to his injuries at around 5:00am Friday, bdnews24 reported citing Dr Samanta Lal Sen, chief coordinator of the hospital’s burn unit.

Nine people were admitted to the unit with severe injuries after a massive fire engulfed Churihatta, a neighbourhood in congested Old Dhaka on February 20.

Anwar Hossain, a 55-year-old rickshaw-puller, died on February 25, five days after being admitted. Sohag, a 25-year-old perfume store worker, died few hours after him.

Three victims were still being treated in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, said Dr Sen. Three others have been released.

Those who were still being treated are: Zakir, 35, with 35 per cent burn wounds, Selim, 44, with 14 per cent wounds and Mahmudul, 52, who suffered 13 per cent wounds in the fire.
