Death toll from Natore road accident reaches seven

The death toll from a bus collision in Natore reached seven as another critically injured woman succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.

Two buses from opposite directions collided in the Bonpara-Hatikumrul area of Natore's Baraigram Upazila around 11:30 am on Saturday. Six people died on the spot and at least 25 others were injured, said Bonpara Highway Police Shafiqul Islam, reports bdnews24.com.

One of the injured, Mohna Akter, 26, was taken to hospital in serious condition and later succumbed to her injuries. She was a resident of Walia village in Natore’s Lalpur Upazila, according to sources from the hospital.

Shariful, a passenger on the National Enterprise bus said their bus was overtaking an Akota Paribahan bus when a Siam Paribahan bus travelling in the opposite direction collided with it.

After the collision, the Siam Paribahan bus hit a truck parked nearby and the National Enterprise bus fell into a roadside ditch and hit a tree.

Police have been unable to confirm the names and identities of the other victims who died in the accident.

The police and the fire service rescued the victims after the incident was reported, said OC Shafiqul.

The 25 injured have been receiving treatment at different hospitals in Bonpara, Natore and Rajshahi, according to police.

Traffic came to a halt on the road following the incident and the police and fire service officials began their rescue work shortly after.
