An inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of police was killed in a reported gunfight with criminals at Middle Pirerbagh in the capital's Mirpur area on early Tuesday.

The deceased Md Jalaluddin was an inspector of DB police.

A source of DB police said tipped-off that a gang of criminals is gathering firearms, a team of DB's Pallabi Zone conducted a drive in a three-storey building in the area around 10:30pm on Monday.

At one stage of drive, criminals opened fire targeting the detectives, prompted them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight. The shootout left Md Jalaluddin injured with bullet on his head, said Proloy Kumar Joarder, deputy commissioner of special action group of Counter Terrorism Unit.

The injured was whisked off to Square Hospitals where he succumbed to his injuries around 2:00am, according to a UNB report.

Criminals, however, managed to flee away through the backside of the building.

Meanwhile, law enforcers detained four people from the house for interrogation.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah visited the spot around 1:00am

While talking to reporters, he said it is not yet clear whether the house is a 'militant hideout' or people lived in there are criminals.
