The department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) is optimistic of getting a bumper yield of wheat in Panchagarh during the current season.
Owing to the low production cost, farmers’ interest in wheat farming is increasing gradually across the region.
According to DAE sources, the crop was cultivated on 16,500 hectares of land this season with an output target of 46,200 metric tonnes.
A BSS reports says that Prodip, a variety of wheat was cultivated on 8,000 hectares, Bijoy variety was cultivated on 3,500 hectares, Sotapdi variety on 3,000 hectares and Bari 25 variety was cultivated on 2000 hectares of land.
“We can harvest at least 10 maunds of wheat from one bigha of land”, said Tariqul Islam, a farmer of village Sanaher under Debiganj upazila.
The grower added that the DAE has provided all sorts of necessary agricultural inputs including seeds, fertilisers and pesticides to them free of cost.
Besides, the department has also imparted trainings to the farmers to make them acquainted with the modern methods of wheat cultivation.
